Varsity Boys Soccer (12-0)
Marquette 7, Houghton 1
On Saturday, September 11, the MSHS Varsity Boys Soccer team hosted Houghton at the Kaufman Sports Complex. Marquette used a quick start to distance themselves from the Gremlins to come away with a 7-1 victory.
MSHS came out firing in the contest by scoring three goals in a five-minute span early in the first half. Isaac Johnson got the scoring started off of an Ezra Pickard corner kick. John Weber then scored from a Zane Phillips free kick. Just 10 seconds later, Max Dawson intercepted the ensuing kickoff and scored an unassisted goal for a 3-0 halftime lead.
In the second half, Dawson scored his second goal from an assist by Hayden Byma. Ethan Sandstrom then made it 5-0 from a Dawson assist.
Houghton would cut the lead to 5-1 with a penalty kick before Pickard scored two more goals with assists from Johnson and Byma for a 7-1 final score.
Harrison Anthos stopped three shots in net for MSHS.
From MSHS Head Coach, Dan Salmon:
- “It was really good effort today and we executed the game plan flawlessly. Offensively, we had five different guys score and five guys with assists, which is better than we expected.”
- The Varsity Boys Soccer team will be idle during the week before traveling to Minocqua, WI on Saturday, 9/17/21, to participate in a four-team showcase hosted by Lakeland Union High School. Marquette’s first game of the event will be at 10:00 a.m. EST, followed by a second game at 12:00 p.m. EST.
