Mollie Kilpela, Trevor Salmon and Hunter Sides Named September Athletes of the Month

Marquette Senior High School, along with Superiorland Kiwanis, are proud to announce that Mollie Kilpela (girls tennis), Trevor Salmon (boys soccer) and Hunter Sides (boys soccer) have been selected as the Athletes of the Month for September.

Mollie Kilpela is currently a senior at MSHS and is a member of the Varsity Girls Tennis team. Playing at #2 Singles this year, Mollie helped lead the team to the 2019 U.P. Division 1 Championship as well as another Great Northern Conference Championship.

Individually, Mollie had a fantastic year on the court. After being runner-up at U.P. Finals in 2017 (at #4 Singles) and 2018 (at #2 Singles), Mollie took home the 2019 U.P. Division 1 Championship at #2 Singles. She was also the runner-up at the 2019 GNC Meet. As a result of her strong play, Mollie earned All-State and All-U.P. First Team Singles honors.

In the winter sports season, Mollie is a highly accomplished member of the girls swimming & diving team. She earned All-U.P. accolades in both 2018 and 2019 and is a four-time U.P. Champion in various events.

Academically, Mollie holds a 4.22 GPA. She has been named to the honor roll for each semester and is an officer for the MSHS National Honor Society. In Spring 2019, she volunteered as a Bay Cliff 5th Grade camp counselor.

Outside of school, Mollie enjoys running, biking, traveling, fishing and sailing.  Mollie’s post-high school ambitions are to continue her education, where she hopes to major in either finance or chemistry with a goal of one day becoming an orthodontist.

Trevor Salmon is a senior student at MSHS and is in the process of wrapping up his senior season as a team captain and member of the Varsity Boys Soccer Team.

Trevor has been a three-year starter for the MSHS Varsity Boys Soccer Team.  At striker, he consistently leads the way offensively with his goal scoring and playmaking abilities.  His senior leadership, experience and talent as a forward played a significant role in the team’s success this year.  For the 2018 boys soccer season, Trevor was named as the team’s “Best Offensive Player” and will likely see similar accolades for the 2019 season.

Academically, Trevor holds a 3.83 GPA and has been recognized on the MSHS Honor Roll on several occasions.  Additionally, Trevor is a proud member of the Marquette-Alger Technical Middle College.  He is a true ambassador for this program and, upon graduating with certifications in Welding and Industrial Maintenance at the end of Summer 2020, Trevor plans to either join the fire department or possibly enlist in the Marines.

For fun, Trevor enjoys restoring vehicles, taking on challenging jobs people need done and helping others in any way that he can.  He is currently working towards 100 volunteer hours through operating scoreboards, teaching welding simulations and other volunteer opportunities.

Hunter Sides is a senior student at MSHS and participates as the center back for the Varsity Boys Soccer Team this fall.  He is a four-year varsity letter winner in the boys soccer program.

In his senior season, Hunter is once again the anchor of the team’s defense that has turned in five shutouts so far this season.  Aside from serving as a team captain this season, Hunter has previously been honored as the team’s “Defensive Player of the Year”.

Academically, Hunter owns a 3.89 GPA and is a regular fixture on the honor roll.  Outside of school and soccer, Hunter remains busy through his extensive extra-curricular involvement.  He is an Executive Board Member for the Student Council and also represents the MSHS Student Body as a representative on the MAPS School Board.  Additionally, he is a member of the National Honor Society, volunteers with the MSHS Key Club and participates in the Wind Symphony Band, Marching Band and Jazz Band.

In his free time, Hunter enjoys hunting, fishing and being outdoors.  His post-high school plans are to continue his education and pursue a degree in wildlife biology with a minor in music composition.
