Marquette Senior High School, along with Superiorland Kiwanis, are proud to announce that Maiya King (volleyball) and Drew Wyble (football) have been selected as the Student-Athletes of the Month for November.
Maiya King is a senior at MSHS and served as team co-captain for the Redette Varsity Volleyball Team this fall. Maiya is a four-year member of the volleyball program and showed consistent development as a player over that time to grow into a major component of the team’s success this season. Her contributions and leadership helped the team to a Great Northern Conference (GNC) Championship with a perfect 8-0 record in conference matches. The team also captured four tournament championships to go along with an appearance in the MHSAA District Championship.
Individually, Maiya had an outstanding season that was a true testament to her work ethic and the out-of-season work that she had put in. At season’s end, Maiya had been named to the MIVCA All-Region Team, All-GNC 1st Team, Marquette Redette Rumble All-Tournament Team and also received the “Coaches’ Award” at this year’s team banquet. In addition, Maiya was invited to MIVCA’s annual showcase where the state’s top 100 players are invited to attend and participate.
Academically, Maiya owns a 3.47 GPA. She has been named to the honor roll for each semester and is a member of the MSHS National Honor Society.
In addition to her volleyball participation, Maiya also plays on the MSHS Varsity Softball Team. She also volunteers with youth volleyball activities and is a group leader for the MSHS 8th Grade Orientation program.
Maiya’s post-graduation plans are to hopefully continue her volleyball career at a college/university while pursing a degree in pre-law or pre-medicine.
Drew Wyble is a senior student at MSHS and wrapped up a stellar final season as a member and team captain of the Redmen Varsity Football Team. In his senior season, Drew was a “lead by example” player that was a major contributor in every phase of the game (offense, defense, special teams). His excellent play helped the football team to it’s first outright Great Northern Conference (GNC) Championship since 1976. The team was also named as the GNC and U.P. Class A-B “Team of the Year”.
As a result of his play as a wide receiver, defensive back, kicker and punter, Drew received several post-season accolades. He was named to the All-U.P. “Dream Team” as a kicker/punter and twice named to the All-GNC Team both as a wide receiver and as a kicker/punter.
Drew’s athletics participation is not limited to the football field as he is also a four-year member of the boys basketball program and two-year member (and former team captain) of the boys soccer team.
Academically, Drew has a 4.07 GPA and is a regular member of the honor roll. He is also a member of the National Honor Society and serves as a member of the MSHS Prom Committee.
Upon graduation, Drew is planning to continue his education at an institution that has yet to be determined while also exploring opportunities to continue his athletics career.
