Marquette Senior High School, along with Superiorland Kiwanis, are proud to announce that Jacey Johnson (girls alpine skiing) and Aaron Grzelak (boys alpine skiing) have been named as the Student-Athletes of the Month for March 2020.
It was hoped to be able to recognize these students in-person at a later date from their original selection, however gathering restrictions resulted in a virtual honoring from Superiorland Kiwanis and MSHS Athletics via Zoom meeting.
Jacey Johnson is a senior student at MSHS and, upon the conclusion of the 2019-20 season, wrapped up a highly accomplished four-year career as a member of the Girls Alpine Ski Team.
The 2019-20 alpine ski season was another milestone campaign for both Jacey and the team. Collectively, MSHS won its fifth consecutive MHSAA Division 1 Girls Alpine Ski Championship. After placing second in both the slalom and giant slalom at the state finals last year, Jacey captured an individual state championship in slalom at the 2020 meet while also placing fifth in the giant slalom.
In addition to her high school skiing experience, Jacey also qualified and competed at the Junior National Championships as a freshman/sophomore and the Eastern High School Championships as a junior/senior. Outside of skiing, Jacey has also represented MSHS by racing as part of the 906 Adventure Team’s mountain biking team in the National Interscholastic Cycling League for the past four years.
In the classroom, Jacey owns a 3.80 GPA. She has been named to the honor roll for each of her semesters at MSHS and is a three-year member of the National Honor Society. Outside of school, she enjoys hiking, drawing and traveling.
Jacey also has a passion for volunteer work and has spent time assisting with the Marquette Marathon, Bob Hosking Ski Race, Marquette Trails Festival, Special Olympics, UPAWS and the MSHS 8th Grade Orientation program. After graduating, Jacey will be attending Northern Michigan University to enroll in the pre-medicine program and compete on the newly formed women’s alpine ski team.
Aaron Grzelak is an MSHS senior and four-year member of the boys alpine ski team who just compiled one of the most accomplished skiing careers in program history.
The 2019-20 season saw the boys alpine ski team capture its eighth consecutive MHSAA Division 1 State Championship, with Aaron leading the way. He followed-up his 2018 individual state championship in slalom by sweeping both events in the 2020 state finals to take both the slalom and giant slalom titles. Aaron’s impressive showing at the meet saw him honored by the MHSAA’s “Second Half” publication with the “Performance of the Week” for the week of February 28, 2020.
Following the conclusion of the MHSAA racing season, Aaron then competed as a member of Team Michigan against racers from 12 other states at the 2020 Eastern High School State Championships. Aaron again topped the competition at this competitive meet when he captured the overall individual championship, a feat he also accomplished in 2019. His individual performance guided Team Michigan to a runner-up finish at the meet.
Aaron’s work ethic and success extends to the classroom, where he owns a 3.3 cumulative GPA and is a four-year member of the honor roll. In his free time, Aaron enjoys training, downhill and endurance mountain bike racing, hunting and fishing. He also volunteers time to assist with mountain bike trail building and maintenance.
Aaron’s post-graduation plans have yet to be finalized as he has been accepted to both Michigan Tech University and Northern Michigan University. Regardless of the institution he chooses to attend, he will continue to train and race in the college, USSA and FIS ski competitions within the U.S.
