Mollie Kilpela and Drew Wyble Named Kiwanis Student-Athletes of the Year

Mollie Kilpela and Drew Wyble Named Kiwanis Student-Athletes of the Year

Marquette Senior High School, along with Superiorland Kiwanis, are proud to announce that Mollie Kilpela (girls tennis, girls swimming and diving) and Drew Wyble (football, boys basketball, boys track and field) have been named as the Student-Athletes of the Year for 2019-2020.

It was hoped to be able to hold the traditional “Athlete of the Year” breakfast ceremony, however gathering restrictions resulted in a virtual honoring from Superiorland Kiwanis and MSHS Athletics via Zoom meeting that also included coaches, family and friends.

Mollie Kilpela, a senior at MSHS, participated as a member of the girls tennis and girls swimming and diving teams during the 2019-20 academic year.

The 2019 girls tennis season ended with Kilpela helping lead the team to its first U.P. Championship since 2005 by capturing an individual U.P. Championship at #2 Singles.  The team also brought home another Great Northern Conference (GNC) title, where she took second place at #2 Singles. At season’s end, Kilpela earned All-State and All-U.P.  accolades.

During the winter sports season, Kilpela had another strong campaign as part of the MSHS girls swimming & team and played a major role in the team’s first place finish at the 2020 U.P. Swimming & Diving Finals.  At the final meet, Kilpela turned in four 2nd Place finishes (200 Medley Relay, 50 Freestyle, 100 Freestyle, 200 Freestyle Relay) to have a hand in 78 of the team’s 377 points at the event.

Academically, Kilpela holds a 4.20 cumulative GPA and serves on the Executive Board of the National Honor Society.  Her post-graduation plans are to attend Florida Gulf Coast University to earn an undergraduate degree before continuing on to dental school.

Drew Wyble is a graduating senior and three-sport student-athlete at MSHS.  During the 2019-20 academic year, Wyble competed as part of the football and boys basketball teams before the cancellation of all spring sports kept him from finishing his career with the track and field season.

With the MSHS football team capturing its first outright conference championship since 1976, Wyble played integral roles in all phases of the game (wide receiver, defensive back, kicker/punter) to help the team achieve its success.  His play during the season earned him All-U.P. “Dream Team” honors as a kicker and All-Great Nothern Conference accolades as both a wide receiver and kicker.

The boys basketball season again saw Wyble play a leadership role in the team’s GNC Championship and advancing to the MHSAA District Final before the their tournament run was unfortunately cut short.  His strong play was rewarded at the conclusion of the season when he was named to the All-U.P. Second Team, All-GNC Second Team and was also selected as the GNC’s “Defensive Player of the Year”.

In the classroom, Wyble owns a 4.11 cumulative GPA.  In February, he signed a National Letter of Intent to attend Michigan Tech University and participate as a member of the Huskies’ football program starting with the 2020-21 academic year.

Listed below are all Kiwanis Student-Athletes of the Month from 2019-20.  Click on each student-athlete to view their athletics honors earned during the fall and winter seasons (*2020 spring sports seasons canceled on 4/3/20).
