Delaney Marchiol and Jacob Garrow Selected As December Student-Athletes of the Month

Delaney Marchiol and Jacob Garrow Selected As December Student-Athletes of the Month

Marquette Senior High School, along with Superiorland Kiwanis, are proud to announce that Delaney Marchiol (girls swimming & diving) and Jacob Garrow (hockey) have been named as the Student-Athletes of the Month for December 2021.

Delaney Marchiol is a senior at MSHS and is having another strong season as part of the MSHS Girls Swimming & Diving Team.

She came into the season holding two school records (200 Individual Medley Relay set in 2021 and 400 Freestyle Relay set in 2019), one U.P. record (400 Freestyle Relay) and is a two-time U.P. Champion.  At the 2021 MHSAA U.P. Swimming & Diving Finals, Delaney racked up one 1st Place finish, three Runner-Up finishes and one 3rd Place finish en route to earning a place on the All-U.P. Team.

So far, Delaney’s senior season looks to be no different than any other season in that it’s filled with success, achievement…and first place finishes.  She racked up four first place finishes (200 Medley Relay, 200 Freestyle, 100 Butterfly, 400 Freestyle Relay) during a competitive triangular meet with Houghton/Sault Ste. Marie on December 18 and two top-three finishes at this past weekend’s Muzz Relays in Saginaw.

In the classroom, Delaney owns an impressive 4.12 cumulative GPA and is a four-time honor roll honoree.  Outside of school, she enjoys working at Yoophoria, reading and watching sunsets.  Delaney’s post-graduation plans are to attend NMU or Michigan State to pursue a career in the medical field, possibly as a veterinarian or pediatrician.

Jacob Garrow is a junior student at MSHS and is an assistant captain on this year’s Varsity Hockey team, which is having a fantastic first half of the season with a 12-1-1 overall record and currently ranked #1 in MHSAA Division 2, according to Michigan Hockey Hub.

On the ice this season, Jake is having a breakout year both in terms of performance and as a team leader with 2021-22 marking his third year as a Varsity Hockey student-athlete.  In the 14 games played so far this season, he has accumulated 7 goals and 15 assists for 22 points, which is tied for tops on the team.  Jake currently leads the team in plus/minus with a +21 rating.

At the conclusion of the 2020-21 season that saw MSHS reach the Division 2 state semifinals, Jake was honored with the team “Unsung Hero” award.  He received the team’s “Most Improved” award as a freshman (2019-20).

Outside of school, Jake has volunteered for the TV6 Canathon as well as in various capacities within Marquette Junior Hockey.  In his free time, he enjoys golf, snowboarding and training to become a better athlete.

Although still a year away, Jake’s post-graduation plans are to continue his education and hockey career with the hopes of fulfilling his lifelong dream of becoming an NCAA Division I Hockey player.
