Aspen Michelin and Gaetano Cammarata Named December Student-Athletes of the Month

Marquette Senior High School, along with Superiorland Kiwanis, are proud to announce that Aspen Michelin (girls basketball) and Gaetano Cammarata (hockey) have been selected as the Student-Athletes of the Month for December.

Aspen Michelin is a senior at MSHS and has helped get the Redette Varsity Girls Basketball Team off to another strong start to the season with a 7-2 overall record.

Aspen is a four-year member of the girls basketball program and has played a large roll in the varsity team’s success during the past two seasons.  Following the Petoskey Invitational earlier this season, Aspen was named to the All-Tournament Team as a result of her strong play.  During the 2019-20 girls basketball season, Aspen averaged 10.3 points, 3.0 rebounds and 3.2 assists per game and was named to the All-GNC 2nd Team.  With the strong contributions of both Aspen and her teammates, the team will undoubtedly be looking to repeat as conference and district champions this season.

During the fall season, Aspen was an important member of the Varsity Volleyball Team that captured an outright conference championship and several tournament victories.  At the conclusion of the season, Aspen was named to the MIVCA Division 1 All-Region and Academic All-State Teams to go along with All-GNC 2nd Team honors.

Academically, Aspen owns a 3.93 GPA.  She has been named to the honor roll for each semester and is a member of the MSHS National Honor Society.
In November 2019, Aspen signed a National Letter of Intent to attend Michigan Tech University, where she will also participate as a member of the Huskies’ women’s basketball program.  Aspen’s planed course of study is exercise science or pre-medicine.

Gaetano Cammarata is an MSHS senior and currently serves as the team captain for the Varsity Hockey Team.

Gaetano had quite the start to the season and really got on a roll for the month of December.  In the eight games that took place during December, the team compiled an impressive 7-1 record and currently sits with an overall record of 11-3.  Individually for the month, Gaetano racked up five goals and 10 assists for 15 points over that eight game span.  In addition, he had a plus/minus rating of +10 and won 64% of his face-offs.

Following the conclusion of the 2018-19 season that saw the team reach the state semifinals, Gaetano was named to the All-Great Lakes Hockey Conference 2nd Team and also earned All-State Honorable Mention accolades.

Academically, Gaetano has a 3.90 GPA and is a Student Council Representative.  Outside of the hockey season, Gaetano participates in the intramural basketball program as well as the MSHS Ping Pong Club.

Upon graduation, Gaetano’s plans are still undecided but does have an interest in potentially attending Michigan State University.  When considering his work ethic as well as his academic and athletics achievements, it is without question that Gaetano will find success in whatever he chooses to pursue.
