Zoe Smith and Axel Vermaat Selected As First Bank Outstanding Scholar-Athletes for 2021-22

MSHS seniors Zoe Smith (girls basketball, girls golf) and Axel Vermaat (boys soccer, boys basketball) have been named as the recipients of the First Bank Outstanding Scholar-Athletes for the 2021-22 academic year.

Thank you to First Bank for their continued support of MSHS and its student-athletes through this award.

Selection criteria for the First Bank Outstanding Scholar-Athlete Award are:

  1. Academic excellence based on cumulative GPA, academic honors received and class standing.
  2. Athletic performance and accolades with students having earned a minimum of four varsity letters. In addition, honorees must have earned varsity letters in at least two sports.
  3. Extracurricular involvement in MSHS clubs/organizations as well as a demonstrated commitment to community service.

Zoe Smith participates in the MSHS Girls Basketball and Girls Golf programs.  She holds a 3.97 cumulative GPA.

Smith’s 2021-22 Involvement and Achievements:

  • Girls Basketball:  BCAM “Outstanding Senior Student-Athlete” Award, All-Great Northern Conference Second Team
  • Girls Golf:  All-U.P. Second Team; All-Great Northern Conference  First Team
  • Additional Extracurricular Involvement:  Student Council Vice President; National Honor Society
  • Other Accomplishments:  Herman E. Olson Citizenship Kaufman Award; Local Scholarship; Kiwanis “Athlete of the Month” – January
  • Post-Graduation Plans:  Attend Grand Valley State University and study business and marketing

 

Axel Vermaat participates in the MSHS Boys Soccer and Boys Basketball programs.  He owns a cumulative GPA of 4.37.

Vermaat’s 2021-22 Involvement and Achievements:

  • Boys Soccer:  Team Captain; Led Team in Assists (18); Third in Goals (10); helped team to 14th consecutive U.P. Championship (21-2 record)
  • Boys Basketball:  Started at guard in all 21 games in the 2021-22 season
  • Additional Extracurricular Involvement:  National Honor Society Treasurer; Student Council; Disc Golf Club; Ping Pong Club; Sierra Club Student Coalition
  • Other Accomplishments:  2021-22 Academic Kaufman Award; Excellence in Education Scholarship; Local Scholarship; Elks State Scholarship; AP Scholar with Distinction; Kiwanis “Athlete of the Month” – October
  • Post-Graduation Plans: Attend college and pursue a career as an economist or politician.

On Thursday morning (6/2/22), student-athletes honored during the 2021-22 academic year as “Athletes of the Month” were invited to again celebrate their collective and individual accomplishments.  Each year, Marquette Senior High School is fortunate to have Superiorland Kiwanis sponsor these monthly events to provide its deserving student-athletes with “Athlete of the Month” awards at recognition ceremonies taking place throughout the academic year.

Although student-athletes are recognized for their accomplishments within one sport during the monthly ceremonies, many go on to participate in subsequent sport seasons and accumulate additional athletics honors.  From the group of honorees, two student-athletes were selected as the 2021-22.

MSHS Athletics, along with Superiorland Kiwanis, are proud to announce that Maria Millado (volleyball; girls basketball) and Wyatt Kuhlman (football; wrestling) have been named as the 2021-22 Student-Athletes of the Year.

2021-22 BCAM All-State Girls Basketball Awards Announced

The Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan (BCAM) have released their All-State Teams for the 2021-22 season, as well as honorees from across the state for several other year-end award categories.  The MSHS Varsity Girls Basketball Team was honored for their academic success, along with five student-athletes.

The Marquette Varsity Girls Basketball Team was named as an Academic All-State program as a result of its average GPA of 3.88.

MSHS senior Maria Millado earned All-State Honorable Mention accolades after a stellar season that also her named to the All-Upper Peninsula First Team and as the Great Northern Conference’s Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year.  Millado was also selected as an Individual Academic All-State Honoree as a result of her 4.25 cumulative GPA.

Seniors Ella Jezewski, Maria Millado, Halle Paternoster and Zoe Smith were honored with the BCAM Outstanding Senior Student-Athlete Award.  Each are four-year members of the MSHS Girls Basketball program and own a cumulative GPA over 3.80.

Junior Lexi Smith was selected to receive the BCAM “Team First” Award.  The “Team First” Award is given to one member per varsity team who is chosen by their BCAM Member Coach.  This team member is be the person that most exemplifies putting team before self, teamwork, commitment, service and sacrifice.

Maria Millado Selected As MHSCA’s Rich Tompkins Multi-Sport Athlete Of The Year

Belleville MI, – The Michigan High School Coaches Association, the professional organization of school coaches and athletic directors, (MHSCA) has selected Maria Millado as the Class A – Girls recipient of the 2021-22 MHSCA Rich Tompkins Multi-Sport Athlete of the Year.

The MHSCA Rich Tompkins Multi-Sport Athlete of the Year is given annually to eight total student-athletes within the state of Michigan with a male and female recipient in Class A, B, C and D.  Recipients are nominated by their school’s athletic administrator and selected based on their participation in interscholastic athletics and a letter award winner in twelve or more sports during an athlete’s high school career.  Along with their contribution to the sport, school, and community.

Millado is a four-year participant in the MSHS Volleyball, Girls Basketball and Girls Track & Field programs.

  • Volleyball Accolades:  2021 MIVCA All-Region; 2021 MIVCA “Best and Brightest” First Team; 2021 Great Northern Conference Player of the Year; set school records for Most Digs (Season), Most Blocks (Match), Most Blocks (Season) and Most Blocks (Career)

The MHSCA is a – 68-year-old association with nearly 15,000 members serving coaches & athletic administrators, and all levels as coaches in numerous high schools and junior/middle highs throughout the state. The Michigan High School Coaches Association works to promote the educational value of interscholastic athletics and the role of athletic administrators and coaches. The MHSCA are very proud to spotlight Maria Millado – a person whose work and values best mirror those of the interscholastic sports.

On Thursday evening (March 31), the Upper Peninsula Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association (UPSSA) voted and released the 2021-22 All-Upper Peninsula girls basketball teams.  MSHS had two student-athletes honored as part of the awards with senior Maria Millado being named to the All-U.P. On Thursday (3/17/22), girls basketball coaches within the Great Northern Conference (GNC) met to select awards recipients for the 2021-22 season.  Member schools within the GNC include Marquette, Escanaba, Gladstone, Kingsford and Menominee.

After claiming an outright conference title this season, MSHS posted a clean sweep of the major awards with senior Maria Millado earning both Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year accolades and Head Coach Ben Smith named as the GNC’s Coach of the Year.  Four additional Redettes were honored with junior Meghan MacPhee (1st Team), senior Zoe Smith (2nd Team), junior Siena Lingle (Defensive Team; Honorable Mention) and senior Ella Jezewski (Honorable Mention)

  • Tonight’s game marks the final regular season contest in the 2021-22 season for the MSHS Girls Basketball program.  The MSHS Varsity Girls Basketball team will now begin postseason play in the MHSAA Division 1 Girls Basketball Tournament next week.  After earning the #1 seed in their district, MSHS has earned a first-round bye and will await the winner of Monday’s (2/28/22) District Quarterfinal match-up between Alpena and Gaylord.  MSHS will host that District Semifinal game on Wednesday (3/2/22) at 6:00 p.m.
