Madalyn Stern and Austin Ridl Receive 2021-22 Kaufman Organizational Awards For Athletics

On Wednesday evening (5/18/22), MSHS seniors Madalyn Stern (alpine skiing, girls soccer) and Austin Ridl (football, track & field) were honored with the MSHS Athletics Organizational Awards from the L.G. Kaufman Endowment School Fund.

Criteria for the award are based on demonstrated qualities in three areas: character, leadership and excellence.

Madlyn Stern is the daughter of Ryan and Hilary Stern.  Maddy is a four-year member of the MSHS Girls Alpine Ski team and was team captain for the 2022 season. Maddy had an incredible run in her final campaign that demonstrated the time, hard work and dedication that she has put into the sport over her career.

By season’s end, Maddy had earned a U.P. Championship in Giant Slalom (GS), an MHSAA Regional Championship in Slalom (5th in GS), and culminated when she captured the 2022 MHSAA Division 1 State Championship in Giant Slalom (8th in Slalom). To go along with these postseason finishes, Maddy was named as the U.P. Girls Skier of the Year and selected to the All-State and All-U.P. Teams.

Maddy’s commitment to excellence extends into the classroom as well. She earned the Academic All-State Award from the Michigan High School Ski Coaches Association (MHSSCA) both this season and as a junior in 2021.

Maddy hopes to attend Northern Michigan University and pursue a nursing degree while also competing on the Wildcats Alpine Ski Team.

Austin Ridl is the son of Jamie Ridl and Molly Mikesch.

Austin has been the leader of the MSHS Varsity Football team for the past three seasons. His play at the quarterback position guided the program to new levels of success with three consecutive MHSAA postseason appearances, three consecutive Great Northern Conference championships and the team being recognized as the U.P. “Team of the Year” for the past two seasons.

In his final season in red and white, Austin passed for 2,237 yards with 26 touchdowns and rushed for 355 yards with 3 touchdowns. These marks, along with his invaluable leadership and work ethic, earned him multiple postseason accolades including Honorable Mention All-State, All-Region; All-U.P. “Dream Team”; and All-Great Northern Conference honors.

In addition to football, Austin is also a member of the MSHS boys track and field program where is he a member of the reigning U.P. champion 800 Meter Relay team and was a member of the 400 Meter Relay team that set a new school record last season.

In February of this year, Austin signed a National Letter of Intent to attend Michigan Tech University, where he will participate as a member of the Huskies football program. His program of study has not yet been decided.

Marquette Senior High School, along with Superiorland Kiwanis, are proud to announce that Madalyn Stern (girls alpine skiing) and Liam McFarren (boys swimming & diving) have been named as the Student-Athletes of the Month for February 2022.

This season marked Maddy’s fourth as a member of the Alpine Ski program with her veteran status and experience making her a team captain for the 2022 season.  Maddy had an incredible run this season that demonstrated the hard work that she has put into the sport over her career.

As the postseason race schedule progressed, Maddy continued to rack up championships.  By season’s end, Maddy had earned a U.P. Championship in Giant Slalom (GS), an MHSAA Regional Championship in Slalom (5th in GS), and an MHSAA State Championship in GS (8th in Slalom).  To go along with these postseason finishes, Maddy was named as the U.P. Teams.  Over the course of her career, Maddy was part of the 2019 and 2020 MHSAA State Championship teams as well as the 2021 MHSAA State Runner-Up team.

Academically, Maddy owns a 4.03 cumulative GPA and has earned honor roll status and the Academic Achievement Award every semester.  She earned the Academic All-State Award from the Michigan High School Ski Coaches Association (MHSSCA) both this season and as a junior in 2021.

To conclude her senior year, Maddy will once again participate as a member of the MSHS Girls Soccer program, where she is a three-year member.  In other extra-curricular involvement, Maddy is part of the National Honor Society and MSHS Spanish Club.  Upon graduating from MSHS, Maddy hopes to attend NMU and pursue a nursing degree while also competing on the Wildcats Alpine Ski Team.

Liam McFarren is currently a junior at MSHS and recently finished another phenomenal year as a member of the boys swimming and diving team.

At the 2022 MHSAA U.P. Swimming & Diving Finals, Liam earned a total of four first-place finishes (200 Medley Relay, 100 Butterfly, 100 Freestyle, 200 Freestyle Relay) en route to helping the team claim its third consecutive team title.  The 200 Freestyle Relay team that Liam was a member of, along with teammates Maverick Baldwin, Bobby Caron and Colin VanderSchaaf, set new school, pool and U.P. records with a time of 1:29.93.

At season’s end, Liam was named U.P. Swimmer of the Year for the second consecutive season and was named to the All-U.P. team for the third straight year.  In his three-year career, Liam has now earned 10 total first-place finishes at the U.P. Finals (five individual, five relays) to go along with the three team championships he has been a part of.

In the classroom, Liam owns a 3.99 cumulative GPA to make him a regular fixture on the honor roll.  He is a three-time honoree on the U.P. Swimming & Diving All-Academic Team and is a member of the National Honor Society.

With the conclusion of the winter sports season, Liam will shift gears and participate as a member of the MSHS Boys Tennis Team this spring.  In addition, he is also looking forward to spending time outdoors and finding time to go fishing.  Liam’s current post-high school plans are to attend NMU and major in biochemistry with the intent to pursue a degree in dentistry from the University of Michigan.
