Marquette Senior High School, along with Superiorland Kiwanis, are proud to announce that Anna Grzelak (girls alpine skiing) and Jack Quinnell (boys basketball) have been named as the Student-Athletes of the Month for March 2023.
Anna Grzelak is an MSHS senior who has just wrapped-up a fourth year on the Girls Alpine Ski Team.
The 2022-2023 was another highly successful season for Anna as she captured the 2023 MHSAA Division 1 State Championship in Giant Slalom (GS). She also finished third at the event in Slalom. These finishes came after Anna earned an MHSAA Regional Championship in Slalom and finished as Regional Runner-Up in GS. To go along with these postseason finishes, Anna was named as the U.P. Girls Skier of the Year and selected to the All-State and All-U.P. Teams. Over the course of her career, Anna was a member of the 2020 MHSAA State Championship 2021 MHSAA State Runner-Up team.
A two-sport athlete at MSHS having also been a four-year member of the Varsity Girls Cross Country Team, Anna owns a 4.35 cumulative GPA which has her included on the MSHS Honor Roll and holding membership in the National Honor Society. Anna’s performance in the classroom has her ranked second in the Class of 2023 and among those receiving Excellence in Education scholarships this year. In addition, Anna earned the Academic All-State Award from the Michigan High School Ski Coaches Association (MHSSCA) both this season and as a junior in 2022.
Anna’s post graduation plans are to attend college and complete pre-requisites for nursing school. She is currently undecided on what institution she will attend but has been accepted into the Michigan State University Honors College and nursing program as well as Northern Michigan University’s nursing school.
Jack Quinnell is of junior class standing at MSHS this year and has just concluded his second season as a member of the MSHS Varsity Boys Basketball team.
Jack served as team captain of this year’s Varsity Boys Basketball team that finished 13-10 overall with a 4-4 mark in Great Northern Conference (GNC) play. After having already spent his sophomore season as a member of the varsity team, Jack was able to utilize that experience to fill a leadership role in a young, but talented group of student-athletes. On the court, he was a consistent contributor with averages of 6.0 points and 6.0 rebounds per game. At season’s end he received All-Conference Honorable Mention accolades from GNC boys basketball coaches.
Jack is a multi-sport student-athlete at MSHS, where he also competes as a member of the Varsity Football team, has previously participated in the MSHS Baseball program and is looking forward to being part of the Boys Track & Field team this spring.
In the classroom, Jack is a standout with a 4.06 cumulative GPA to put him in the Top 10 of his class and a regular member of the MSHS Honor Roll. Outside of school, Jack volunteers time with the Marquette Junior Wildcats Basketball Program and also works as an on-field official for Marquette County Youth Football.
Upon completing high school as a member of the Class of 2024, Jack would like to attend the University of Michigan, to pursue a law degree with aspirations of one day becoming a lawyer.
