Marquette Senior High School, along with Superiorland Kiwanis, are proud to announce that Ava Larson (dance team) and Griffin Moore (wrestling) have been named as the Student-Athletes of the Month for February 2020.
It was hoped to be able to recognize these students in-person at a later date from their original selection, however gathering restrictions resulted in a virtual honoring from Superiorland Kiwanis and MSHS Athletics via Zoom meeting.
Ava Larson is a senior at MSHS and finished her athletics career as a leader on this year’s Dance Team.
Ava showed tremendous poise and initiative within this year’s dance team by taking the reins to help lead choreography for the talented group of student-athletes that took 1st Place for their “Home Show” routine at the 2019 Just For Kix camp that they attended. Throughout the long season, she remained positive and supportive of her teammates/coaches while always giving 110% during practices and games. Ava’s contributions to the team were instrumental in making their experience performing at the 2020 Outback Bowl a positive one.
Academically, Ava owns a 4.13 GPA. She earned the Outstanding Academic Achievement Award while also being named to the honor roll for each semester at MSHS and is a three-year member of the National Honor Society. This year, Ava gained additional experience to apply toward her future area of study through an internship at the Marquette Arts and Culture Center, where she assisted with Marketing and PR.
Outside of school, Ava enjoys photography and riding her horse, where she competes in dressage and showjumping. Upon graduation, Ava is planning on taking a gap year from her full-time studies to pursue a startup business and travel. During this time, she will continue her education in a part-time capacity through online courses at Northern Michigan University geared towards Marketing and Graphics Design.
Griffin Moore is a graduating senior at MSHS and had his impressive athletics career end as a four-year member of the wrestling and football programs. At the Northern Michigan Wrestling Championships that took place in Gaylord on 2/1/20, Griffin joined elite company within the MSHS Wrestling program when he earned his 100th career victory.
In addition to earning his 100th career victory during the 2019-20 wrestling season, Griffin is a two-time finalist at the U.P. Championships as well as a two-time regional qualifier. At season’s end, Griffin was presented with the John Rauch Award, which is awarded to a member of the wrestling team with a satisfactory scholastic record, good conduct, a good sport in all areas of life, and is of good moral character.
Griffin is a multi-sport student-athlete at MSHS and also participated as a member of the 2019 varsity football team that captured its first outright conference championship since 1976. His positive attitude and good work ethic allowed him to consistently impact the game in each facet he was involved with. With a 3.85 cumulative GPA, Griffin’s accolades extend to the classroom as well, where he is a four-year member of the honor roll, National Honor Society member and Renaissance Scholar.
In his free time, Griffin stays busy by volunteering time at the Jacobetti Home for Veterans, Veteran Fishing Day and has been a youth wrestling coach for the past three years. Upon graduating from MSHS, Griffin will be attending Northern Michigan University next fall, where he will enroll in the pre-PA program.
